Playful Tutorial

I found that most design programs' tutorials to be unhelpful, so here is a case study on an alternative interface that focuses on accommodating designers’ learning needs when they are introduced to new programs.

This idea stemmed from my personal experience with tutorials that are made for design programs, of which I end up disregarding anyway, because they are often boring and sometimes confusing.

In conversation with my friends, who were also fellow design students, they also reflected a similar experience to mine when they were introduced to a new design program.

Then I thought of the question: How do I make the tutorial more fun so people will use it? Maybe I can gamify the process?

Through user interviews and user observation, my findings were that users prefer straightforwardness for better comprehension, and that often came through interaction with the software, which is more than just reading a block of text. With these findings in mind, my solution for that need is to focus on showing users where to find the needed information and let users learn by doing.

Some of the biggest takeaways from this case study are that my research can disprove my expectations, and sometimes a project can have more than one focus that needs to be researched, such as playfulness and information retention, which prompts different focuses within the project. Some of my more extensive thoughts on this project is fully documented on my Medium page.
