Turing Over Time

This is a visual novel-like projection-mapped game where museum visitors time traveled to learn about varying methods of data encryption.

In this projection-mapped narrative game, Player’s goal is to find the correct data encryption that fit the story scenario in order to progress to the next story. There are total of three scenarios for three encryption methods: Bombe Machine, Tokenization Mask, and RSA Asymmetric Encryption. On the FAST table, the projection mapped interaction station, Player will be provided with four different interactable objects that each represent a different encryption method, and among them there is a red herring. Player will need to use clues in the stories to deduce the correct choice for each questions that will be asked during the game.

This project utilizes Museum of Science (MOS)’s in-house made projection mapping system, FAST. We were also given their running-exhibit’s project template as a base to build upon in order to achieve a faster prototyping process. However, while analyzing the template, I realized that there is a fundamental user flow difference between the program structure of the existing projects and our planned experience. I was the developer in our group, so I restructured the template to better suit our needs. Our game has linearity built into its structure; it helps Player to make easier deductive decisions and it gave context to the ending video of the game. In contrast, the template did not contain this linearity, as its original progression does not require the context of players’ prior interactions with the program. The original template provide educational information in an independent format that are only relevant to their correlating item. Our game aim to provide a broader historical context to the overall development of encrypting technology hence the linearity in providing context for each story segments.
